Back in the 90’s, Emmitt Smith reached out to Michael Jordan to see if he could learn a little more about business from him. Mike agreed and set up the meeting place.
After they met, Emmitt asked Mike, “How come we don’t have meetings like this more often to learn from each other and do business together?”
Mike, “What did you have to do to get this meeting?”
Emmitt, “I had to call you to ask you for the information.”
Mike, “Exactly. If you had not done that we would not be sitting down talking about business right now. You were humble enough to ask for help, meaning you were willing to learn. I cannot teach someone who is not willing to learn. You have to have a fertile mind before seeds can be planted or you will never learn.”
As the saying goes “When the student is ready the teacher will appear
In a meeting recently I heard someone say
“I can’t do that yet, because I haven’t been trained”
The believe system being that learning needs to be an event that is scheduled by the company.
Learning is the desire to grow and has to come from within and expressed, pushed and driven by you.
Those who don’t seek it, might not get it.
Equally – when the opportunity to grow is offered, we must be open and eager to want to learn, to grab the opportunity.
Don’t ever participate in training because you are told to be there. No learning can happen if you are not open and eager to get better.
As the saying goes “you can not push a rope”
