Inspect Now, Prevent Leaks Later

Inspection services weren’t originally part of the Innovator Industrial Services business plan, but they grew out of obvious need through collaboration with clients. As Innovator technicians worked on the maintenance and repair of pressurized piping systems, two things became apparent:

  • Before you can make a repair, you have to find the damage. Predictive and preventative planning was, and is, a must.
  • Key specialized technology to find these defects wasn’t always readily available, so proactive repairs couldn’t be performed.

“We got into inspection because we’re involved in finding leaks and repairing piping defects,” says Don Cooper, Innovator President and General Manager. “As we were working on all those repairs, it became very clear that someone had to find and inspect these defects before failure of systems occured. We wanted more efficient ways not only to perform the repairs, but also to locate defects in the first place—preventing leaks rather than just repairing them.”

To supplement our core competence in repair, Innovator has added a suite of inspection services to help our customers even more by predicting and preventing leaks.

What inspection services does Innovator provide?

Innovator provides a wide array of inspection services using advanced technologies. One of these is Eddy Current Inspection, which uses eddy currents induced by an alternating magnetic field to detect surface-breaking or near-surface cracking and variations in material composition in exchanger tubes, and to measure the thickness of non-electrically conductive coatings on electrically conductive materials. Specialists who are experienced and certified to perform this type of inspection are relatively scarce, and Innovator has employed some of the best. So the addition of this talent to Innovator’s services lineup will help make eddy current inspection more widely available.

Another inspection service is Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) Inspection, which is a low-cost, high-value preventive measure. With Innovator’s exclusive CUI Rapid Detection OM3 (RDOM3) tool, in-service piping and equipment can be inspected without interruption and without removal of insulation, which saves clients substantial time and money. Innovator is currently the only service company in Canada that offers this advanced testing capability.

“CUI is a huge problem in any plant, offshore rig, or piping system that is introduced to moisture and the elements,” explains Jason Gulliver, Innovator Quality Inspection Leader. “The CUI RDOM3 allows us to detect corrosion under insulation without having to remove it. This not only zeros in on problem areas and makes repairs more timely, but without having to remove all that insulation and reinstall, it represents huge cost savings and efficiencies.”

Cooper says, “With CUI, we can inspect 80-90% of customers’ piping systems covered with insulation, which is 80-90% more than what they can do now,” says Gulliver. “We are not only preventing a serious event, but also helping customers to manage costs in a proactive way.”

Innovator offers a number of other inspection services in addition to Eddy Current and CUI inspections. Many of these inspections can be performed in a single visit to the customer’s site. These services include the following:

  • Video Inspection
  • Remote Field Testing (RFT) Inspection
  • Airborne Ultrasonic Inspection
  • Ultrasonic Internal Rotary Inspection System (IRIS)
  • Magnetic Particle Inspection
  • Liquid Penetrant Inspection
  • Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement
  • API 510 and 570 Visual Services

An investment in reliability

The newly launched Inspection Services is the latest offering in Innovator’s commitment to continually add value for our customers. Our intent with these custom services is to help our customers increase reliability and predictability of their equipment’s performance.

“We are looking for customers who are courageous enough to want to make an investment in a high level of reliability,” says Cooper. “The return on investment is almost instant.”
