5 Years Injury-Free: How Did Innovator Achieve a Zero TRIR?

Reaching five years injury-free is no easy feat. It’s especially impressive for a company with a team of cross-trained professionals who perform such a variety of on-site services in areas where risks are present. However, for the experts at Innovator, five years with a zero total recordable incident rate (TRIR) is a reality. But getting every Innovator crew member home safe for five consecutive years took much more than tallying numbers.

“Half a decade or five years TRIR-free is a significant achievement,” said Tyler Santos, Innovator marketing coordinator. “We are proud of our employees for being dedicated to working safely and achieving our goal of Everyone Home Safe.”

Santos and fellow Innovator experts include TRIR as part of their safety initiative to “figure out how many workers would get injured for every 100 workers worth of full-time hours worked.” TRIR, therefore, is a relatively simple equation. Multiply the number of total recordable incidents by 200,000. This figure, 200,000, represents the total number of hours 100 workers log in a year. In other words, it is the sum of 100 employees working 40 hours a week for 50 weeks. Take that number and divide it by the total number of hours worked by all employees in that year, hence the “recordable incident” part of the term, to determine incident frequency.

(Total recordable incidents x 200,000) / Total hours worked = TRIR

Put Innovator figures into the formula, and the last five years’ equations have equaled zero. But these numbers mean more than just well-executed safety measures. At Innovator, they also indicate that hard work is paying off — and there’s always room for improvement.

“The statistics are a measure of performance information, which also provides feedback on the effectiveness of our safety management system, allowing for continual improvements to be made,” Santos said. “We believe that all work must be completed safely with quality and cost-effectiveness. This allows us to shine.”

That’s part of what gives their crews the Innovator Advantage. And for the professionals at this company, there’s even more to safety than zero TRIR.

“When you’re a safe company, it’s represented by your safety culture,” Santos explained. “Innovator’s strong safety culture is demonstrated at every level by all our employees through everything we do.”
